시트콤 '프렌즈'를 아는가?

1994 ~ 2004년까지 NBC에서 방송된, 미국의 전설적인 시트콤

방영 내내 2000만명이 넘는 평균 시청률을 기록하고, 1990년대 미국 문화에 가장 큰 영향을 끼친 문화 컨텐츠로 평가받은 전설의 시트콤 'Friends!'

 

BTS RM 님께서도 영어공부를 위해 봤던 드라마 프렌즈

오늘은 시트콤 프렌즈를 통해 영어 표현들에 대해 알아보고자 한다!

 

Season 1. Epi #1 Monica Gets a New Roommate

 

Monica: There's nothing to tell! He's just some guy I work with!

Joey: C'mon, you're going out with the guy! There's gotta be something wrong with him!

Chandler: So does he have a hump? A hump and a hairpiece?

Phoebe: Wait, does he eat chalk?

Phoebe: Just, 'cause, I don't want her to go through what I went through with Carl- oh!

Monica: Okay, everybody relax. This is not even a date. It's just two people going out to dinner and- not having sex.

Chandler: Sounds like a date to me.

 

현재 모니카가 어떤 남자와 단 둘이 만남을 약속하고 있다.

친구들은 그게 바로 데이트라고 하지만 모니카는 아니라고 하는 상황..

 

Go Out With vs Hang Out With

둘 다 누군가와 놀 때 사용하는 표현이지만,

위 대본에서 예상할 수 있듯이, Go out with (somebody)의 경우, 이성 간의 데이트에 조금 더 가까운 표현이다.

Go out with : (이성 간의)데이트를 하다. Hang out with : (친구들과)어울려 놀다.

 

Hump : 혹

Hairpiece : 털

So does he have a hump and a hairpiece?

그래서 그 남자한테 혹이나 털이 달려있어?

(그 남자가 무슨 문제가 있어서 너를 만나.. 이런 뉘앙스로 날리는 챈들러의 드립이라고 보면 된다.)

 

Go through : 겪다, 지내보다.

I don't want her to go through what I went through with Carl.

나는 내가 Carl이랑 겪었던 일을 걔가 겪지 않았으면 해..

Chandler: Alright, so I'm back in high school, I'm standing in the middle of the cafeteria, and I realize I am totally naked.

All: Oh, yeah. Had that dream.

Chandler: Then I look down, and I realize there's a phone... there.

Joey: Instead of...?

Chandler: That's right.

Joey: Never had that dream.

Phoebe: No.

Chandler: All of a sudden, the phone starts to ring.

Chandler: Finally, I figure I'd better answer it, and it turns out it's my mother, which is very-very weird, because- she never calls me!

 

챈들러가 자신이 꿨던 고등학생 때로 돌아간 꿈에 대해 얘기해주고 있는 상황

나체로 있었는데, 자신의 그곳(?)에 폰이 있었고, 폰에서 엄마로부터 전화가..!

챈들러는 자신의 꿈에서 자신의 그곳에 폰이 달려있고 나체 상태로 있는 것보다 엄마한테서 전화온게 더 이상하다고 느끼는ㅋㅋ 확실히 챈들러의 특이한 성격이 드러나는 것 같다.

 

All of a sudden : 갑자기

Turn Out ~ : ~라고 판명되다.

figure I'd better ~ : ~하는 편이 좋겠다고 판단하다.

I figure I'd better answer it, ant it turns out it's my mother, which is very very weird, because she never calls me!

나는 전화를 받는 편이 좋겠다고 생각했고 엄마였더라고, 이게 진짜 진짜 이상한게 엄마는 나한테 전화 절대 안하거든!

Ross: Hi.

Joey: This guy says hello, I wanna kill myself.

Monica: Are you okay, sweetie?

Ross: I just feel like someone reached down my throat, grabbed my small intestine, pulled it out of my mouth and tied it around my neck...

Chandler: Cookie?

Monica: (explaining to the others) Carol moved her stuff out today.

Monica: (to Ross) Let me get you some coffee.

Phoebe: Ooh! Oh! (She starts to pluck at the air just in front of Ross.)

Ross: No, no don't! Stop cleansing my aura! No, just leave my aura alone, okay?

Ross: I'll be fine, alright? Really, everyone. I hope she'll be very happy.

Monica: No you don't.

Ross: No I don't, to hell with her, she left me!

Joey: And you never knew she was a lesbian...

Ross: No!! Okay?! Why does everyone keep fixating on that? She didn't know, how should I know?

Chandler: Sometimes I wish I was a lesbian... (They all stare at him.) Did I say that out loud?

Joey: Alright Ross, look. You're feeling a lot of pain right now. You're angry. You're hurting. Can I tell you what the answer is?

(Ross gestures his consent.)

Joey: Strip joint! C'mon, you're single! Have some hormones!

Ross: I don't want to be single, okay? I just... I just- I just wanna be married again!

(Rachel enters in a wet wedding dress and starts to search the room.)

Chandler: And I just want a million dollars! (He extends his hand hopefully.)

 

세상 우울하게 인사하는 로스..

바로 그는 최근에 이혼을 했고, 그 이유가 전처가 레즈비언이라서다..!!

그의 우울한 기분을 치울려고 하는 피비와 애써 괜찮다고 하는 로스ㅜ

그리고 역시나 옆에서 아무렇지 않게 쿠키나 건내며 내가 레즈비언이었으면..농담을 던지는 챈들러

스트립 바에 가서 여자 꼬시면서 솔로를 즐겨보라는 우리의 날나리 조이 ㅋㅋ

그리고 걍 결혼이 하고 싶다는 로스의 말에 웨딩 드레스를 입은 레이첼의 등장..

 

feel like ~ : ~하는 기분이다.

reach down : 손을 뻗다.

intestine : 창자, 내장

pull it out : 잡아 당기다, 뽑아내다.

tie : 묶다.

I just feel like someone reached down my throat, grabbed my small intenstine, pulled it out of my mouth and tied it around my neck.

나는 누가 내 목구멍 안에 손을 집어 넣고, 내 작은 내장을 쥐어서, 입 밖으로 꺼낸 다음, 목을 조르고 있는 것 같아..!

(그 만큼 너무 답답하고 힘들다는거.. 사랑하던 아내가 레즈비언이라서 이혼한다고 하니..ㅜ)

 

Stop cleansing my aura : 내 아우라를 청소하려 하지 마!(내 우울한 기운을 치우려 들지 마! 정도로 해석할 수 있겠네요..)

 

레이첼의 등장과 함께.. 앞으로 어떤 일들이 벌어질지..

 

10년이 넘는 긴 시간 동안 여섯 친구들의 사랑과 우정을 보며 이들만의 특별한 케미에 매료될 수 밖에 없는 '프렌즈'

전부 다는 올리지 못하겠지만 시즌 1에 에피소드 1만큼은 다 공부해볼려고 한다.
